As a member of SHM, your voice and participation are an integral part of our organization and help us positively impact the practice of hospital medicine.
Here are some opportunities for you to get more involved with SHM and identify yourself as a leader in hospital medicine.
Volunteer Opportunities
Become a Chapter Leader
Make an impact at SHM by volunteering for your local chapter. Nominations for chapter leadership positions will reopen in the Fall of 2024. Each chapter has a minimum of three leadership positions with set terms and job descriptions. Every dues-paying member is eligible to nominate colleagues or self-nominate for a chapter leadership position.
Serve on an SHM Committee
Collaborate with your hospital medicine colleagues to further the vision and objectives of SHM by volunteering on a committee. Applications open in late summer and close in the early fall. View a listing of SHM committees here.
Join a SIG Executive Council
Every SIG needs a solid foundation to develop and foster a strong community. Each SIG’s leadership team, the SIG Executive Council (EC), self-determines the exact process for joining the group’s leadership team, however, terms will start and end with SHM Converge. Contact your SIG’s Executive Council directly through HMX and/or reach out to SIG program staff at sigs@shm.org for more information on how you can get involved.
Make Valuable Connections
Join a SIG
SHM's Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are designed to create communities of hospitalists around topics of interest, practice areas, and/or care models. SIGs are virtual networking communities that allow members to connect with peers who share practice interests and/or types. SHM members can participate in as many groups as they wish. Connect With Your Local Chapter
Members are assigned to a chapter based on their geographic location that provides opportunities for members to learn and connect on a local level. Visit the events calendar to find an upcoming chapter meeting in your area, or visit the chapter’s HMX community to connect virtually.
Submit Your Work and Lend Your Voice
SHM values our members’ contributions to the field of hospital medicine and wants to help them share their work with the broader hospital medicine community.
Publish Your Work
SHM is home to a respected portfolio of publications that aims to inform all members of the hospital medicine team in a variety of article types and styles. Learn how you can submit your work to The Hospitalist and the Journal of Hospital Medicine and access helpful tips and guidance on getting published.
Scientific Abstract Competition
Present your work to a national audience at SHM Converge. Many of the cutting-edge abstracts that are presented are later published in leading medical journals in the field. The submission site is open through November 28, 2023.
SHM Converge Call for Content
Share your insights with the hospital medicine community and let your voice be heard at SHM Converge, the largest gathering of hospital medicine professionals. Help create SHM's Converge experience by submitting; session ideas, speaker nominations, workshop opportunities, keynote topics, and more.
The call for content for SHM Converge 2025 will open in May 2024.
Share a Testimonial
SHM regularly features our members in our email, print, and social communications on upcoming conferences, educational resources, membership, and more. If you are interested in submitting a video or written testimonial, contact our marketing team for a list of campaigns and simple instructions for capturing and sharing video content.
