SHM Secures Further Delay to Changes to the Split (or Shared) Billing Policy
On July 13th, 2023, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) published the CY2024 Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule. In this rule, CMS has proposed to delay the implementation of the time-based definition of a “substantive portion” of a split (or shared) visit through at least December 31st, 2024. This delay is a result of vocal and consistent advocacy from SHM and other key stakeholders.

The Journal of Hospital Medicine (JHM), the official peer-reviewed journal of the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), recently published original research, “What’s in a Name? Laypeople’s Understanding of Medical Roles and Titles,” which found that laypeople lack a clear understanding of the names of medical specialties and the titles used to indicate seniority in medical training. We see the effects of gun violence firsthand when victims receive care in the hospital, we experience it directly when we no longer feel safe in our workplace due to the prevalence of violence in the clinical setting, and we feel it as community members when our hometowns experience these tragedies. The Society of Hospital Medicine Welcomes Congressional Relief from Upcoming Medicare Cuts
On Monday December 21, 2020, Congress passed sweeping end-of-year and COVID-19 legislation that included much-needed relief from impending cuts to the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule. Hospitalists were originally slated to receive an estimated 8 percent reduction in their Medicare fee-for-service revenues based on finalized policies in the 2021 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule. According to Congressional estimates, the legislation would reduce the impact of the cuts by approximately half to two-thirds.

The Society of Hospital Medicine Urges Congress to Reverse Changes in Reimbursement Rates Under 2021 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released the 2021 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule, which finalized proposed changes to Medicare reimbursement rates, including a significant negative budget neutrality adjustment. For hospitalists, the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) estimates that the adjustment will amount to an estimated eight percent reduction in Medicare reimbursement rates, which will go into effect on January 1, 2021.

The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) recently opened the 2020 State of Hospital Medicine (SoHM) Survey and is participants to contribute data about their group to the collective understanding of the state of the specialty.
