Research Training:

This fellowship serves as an integrated one-year program for physicians who are considering a career in academic or hospital medicine with an emphasis on quality improvement, patient safety, and leadership development. The University of Michigan Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program is dedicated to creating Hospitalist Investigators. Graduates of the program have gone on to receive tenured track positions with 80% protected time for research. The program is built within the Michigan National Clinician Scholars Program (formerly the RWJ Clinical Scholars Program). The hospitalist service at MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) treats approximately 25,000 patients annually. MDACC is one of the largest cancer research centers in the world. As such, the institution provides an exceptional environment for oncology education and research. The section of hospitalist medicine provides a gateway to a unique perspective into the complexity and management of the oncology patient in the hospital setting. There is an unparalleled variety of pathology and a multiplicity of medical problems seen by the hospitalists at MDACC. The clinical training is based on direct involvement in patient care under the supervision of a full-time faculty physician. Research Training:

The Department of General Internal Medicine at MDACC is home to the R25 Methods Training in Patient-Centered Cancer Outcomes Research grant, which provides a didactic training program for all fellows with little to no prior training in research methods. The fellow should expect procedurally rich training including training in bedside ultrasound evaluation and ultrasound guided procedures including central line placement, paracentesis, thoracentesis, etc. The fellow will obtain advanced training with an interdisciplinary team approach in adult inpatient medicine including critical care within a longitudinal curriculum that will include subspecialty experience in infectious disease, pulmonology, cardiology, nephrology and gastroenterology. Other optional electives include anesthesia/airway management and emergency medicine. The fellow will also get teaching experience in supervising residents on the family medicine inpatient service. There will be some flexibility in curriculum to meet the desired training of each individual fellow.

Clinical rotations account for approximately 60% of the total weeks during fellowship. In addition to core rotations in hospital medicine, newborn, complex care, co-management, and sedation, individualized rotations in intensive care, emergency medicine, palliative care, surgery, child abuse and neglect, and pain management are available. All rotations are structured to permit independent medical decision-making with graduated autonomy.

Research Training:
