SHM to Host over 3,000 Hospitalists at Its Annual Meeting  

Hospital Medicine 2016 to Provide Extensive Education and Networking Opportunities to Hospital Medicine Professionals

The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) will welcome over 3,000 hospitalists to its annual meeting, Hospital Medicine 2016 (HM16), in San Diego, California from March 6 to 9, 2016. HM16 is the premier and largest educational and networking event for healthcare professionals who specialize in hospital medicine.

This year’s meeting will kick off with a keynote address from Dr. Karen DeSalvo, MD, MPC, MSC, and Acting Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services. Dr. DeSalvo is well known and respected for her leadership in high-quality patient care, medical education, research, policy and healthcare administration, and public service. Dr. DeSalvo will be speaking on public health and the role of hospitalists and hospitals.

Wrapping up HM16 will be renowned healthcare quality and health IT expert – and one of the founders of the Society of Hospital Medicine – Dr. Robert M. Wachter. He coined the term “hospitalist” in a New England Journal of Medicine article with co-author Dr. Lee Goldman in 1996. Dr. Wachter will speak on the last 20 years of hospital medicine and how hospitalists will lead to chart a path forward and provide the best quality of care to hospitalized patients in an ever-changing healthcare environment.

Hospital Medicine 2016 features three new educational tracks: Co-Management/Perioperative Medicine, Health IT for Hospitalists and Post-Acute Care. For the second year in a row, SHM is featuring a track just for young hospitalists, medical students and residents, who are interested in exploring a career in hospital medicine. Trainees will have opportunities to network with career hospitalists and each other, learn how to get published, negotiate their first job and get an in-depth look into the role of hospitalists in high-value care and the plethora of opportunities for them in the hospital medicine specialty.

With over 3,000 hospitalist attendees, more than 115 educational sessions, 13 learning tracks, two incredible keynote speakers, nearly 200 exhibitors from pharma to health IT, Hospital Medicine 2016 will clearly be the event of the year for clinicians and administrators in hospital medicine, providing them with the knowledge and tools they need to transform healthcare and revolutionize patient care.
