New Strategy Aims to Develop a Pipeline of Hospital Medicine Leaders
The Journal of Hospital Medicine, the official peer-reviewed journal of the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), has launched a new Leadership and Professional Development (LPD) series, which debuted in the February 2019 issue. This month’s issue includes an introduction to the new series as well as the inaugural LPD article entitled “Hire Hard, Manage Easy.”
The introduction to the series, written by Vineet Chopra, MD, MSc, Deputy Editor of JHM, emphasizes that leadership training is “just as important as evidence-based medicine” and provides details on the model of the LPD series. Readers are encouraged to share their “pearls of wisdom” and are provided with submission guidelines. Along with Dr. Chopra, the LPD series is edited by Dr. Karen Jerardi MD, MEd, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
“Being a hospitalist is all about leadership – of patients, medical providers and ultimately healthcare facilities,” notes Dr. Chopra. “Unfortunately, we are never taught core skills of leadership, including how best to manage people, think strategically, resolve conflicts and motivate teams to perform at high levels. The goal of the LPD series is to fill this knowledge gap, especially as hospital medicine continues to grow.”
The debut LPD article, “Hire Hard, Manage Easy,” was originally written by Dr. Chopra and Sanjay Saint, MD, MPH, FHM for their book entitled Thirty Leadership Rules for Healthcare Providers. This article discusses various situations that may occur when leaders choose a new hire based on “whoever has available time or interest” rather than conducting a proper candidate search.
“JHM is invested in providing tools to help develop a pipeline of leaders in the field and increase diversity in academic leadership, both in hospital medicine and healthcare in a broader scope,” says Samir S. Shah, MD, MSCE, SFHM, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Hospital Medicine. “The new Leadership and Professional Development series is one critical part of our strategy.”
