Society of Hospital Medicine Announces Four New Officer Appointments, Welcomes Four New Members to the Board of Directors

At Hospital Medicine 2019 (HM19) in National Harbor, MD, the Society of Hospital Medicine’s (SHM’s) Chief Executive Officer, Laurence Wellikson, MD, MHM, announced that Danielle Scheurer, MD, MSCR, SFHM was voted president-elect, Tracy Cardin, ACNP-BC, SFHM was voted treasurer and Rachel Thompson, MD, MPH, SFHM was elected secretary. Christopher Frost, MD, SFHM assumed his role as President of the Board of Directors at the conference, succeeding Nasim Afsar, MD, MBA, SFHM. In tandem, Flora Kisuule, MD, SFHM, Bryce Gartland, MD, FHM, Mark Shen, MD, MBA, SFHM and Chad Whelan, MD, FACP, FHM were elected to the board for a three-year term.
“The changes occurring across the healthcare environment are dynamic, and we are excited for SHM to play an active, rather than reactive, role in authoring aspects of this change,” explains Dr. Frost. “Each of these new board members possesses a significant amount of subject matter expertise and a visionary outlook that will aid the SHM board as we identify opportunities to support hospitalists and provide exceptional care to our patients.”
Dr. Frost has been an influential member of SHM since 2003 and has served on the Board of Directors since 2015. He has served on numerous committees beginning in 2008, including the Practice Analysis Committee, the Awards Committee and the Digital Learning Committee.
New board member Bryce Gartland, MD, FHM is Hospital Group President and Co-Chief of Clinical Operations at Emory Healthcare where he is accountable for overall performance and achievement across Emory Healthcare’s eleven hospitals. He formerly served as CEO for Emory University Hospital, Emory University Orthopaedic & Spine Hospital, and Emory Wesley Woods Hospital. Dr. Gartland has been an SHM member since 2007 and served on the Practice Management Committee for six years.
Also joining the board is Flora Kisuule, MD, SFHM, Associate Director of the Division of Hospital Medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and Associate Vice Chair for Clinical Operations in the Johns Hopkins Bayview Department of Medicine. Dr. Kisuule is a member of SHM for over 15 years, has served on a number of committees and was the 2018 recipient of SHM’s prestigious Award of Excellence for Outstanding Service.
Mark Shen, MD, SFHM, also joins the board this year. Most recently, Dr. Shen served as president of Saint Louis Children’s Hospital. Previously, he was with Ascension Health, Inc. from 2007 to 2018 and served in multiple leadership roles, including president, Dell Children’s Medical Center/Dell Children’s Health. Dr. Shen has been an SHM member since 2006 and serves as the Board Liaison for SHM’s Performance Measurement and Reporting Committee.
The fourth new board member is Chad Whelan, MD, FACP, FHM, Chief Executive Officer of Banner – University Medicine Tucson and was previously the president of Loyola University Medical Center (LUMC) in Maywood, IL, the only academic medical center within Trinity Health. Dr. Whelan has been a member of SHM for nearly 20 years, has served on a number of SHM committees and now serves as the board liaison for the Academic Hospitalist Committee.
President-elect Danielle Scheurer, MD, SFHM says of the new board, “We can and should be leading the nation in improving value in healthcare, and I look forward to working with hospitalists from all over the country (and world!) to be a productive change agent in this quest.
