Articles Examine Implications in Patient Communication, Diagnostics, Medical Education, Ethics, & More

Today, the Journal of Hospital Medicine (JHM), the official peer-reviewed journal of the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), released a special issue focused on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in hospital medicine, exploring its applications in a variety of areas, including patient communication, medical education, clinical reasoning, ethics, and more.

Given the proliferation of AI in a variety of domains following its rapid growth this decade, many clinicians in a variety of specialties are either considering or already exploring incorporating the technology into the clinical setting. To provide context, encourage conversation, and inspire judicious implementation of AI technology, like Open AI’s GPT-4 or Google’s BARD, the JHM editorial team found it fitting to compile recent thoughtful, scholarly submissions on the topic in one issue.

Articles in this issue include:

  • Artificial Intelligence in Medicine: A Primer and Recommendations
  • The Promise—and Peril—of Generative Artificial Intelligence
  • Diagnostic Reasoning in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
  • Artificial Intelligence, Ethics, and Hospital Medicine
  • Artificial Intelligence and Patient Communication
  • The Promises and Limitations of Artificial Intelligence for Quality Improvement
  • The Generative Artificial Intelligence Revolution: How Hospitalists Can Lead the
  • Transformation of Medical Education
  • Conversations on Reasoning: Large Language Models in Diagnosis

“As hospitalists, we are responsible for exploring and understanding this revolutionary technology,” collectively note Zahir Kanjee, MD, MPH, Charlie M. Wray, MD, DO, MS, Andrew P.J. Olson, MD, and Samir S. Shah, MD, MSCE, MHM, editors of this special issue. “Leaving AI considerations entirely to non-clinicians without our comprehending it or knowing how to properly integrate it in the hospital risks foregoing important benefits and, more importantly, potential harm to our patients, colleagues, and selves.”
