Today at Hospital Medicine 2017 (HM17), the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM)’s Chief Executive Officer, Laurence Wellikson, MD, MHM, announced that Ron Greeno, MD, MHM was elected President of SHM’s Board of Directors, and Nasim Afsar, MD, SFHM was voted President-Elect. Kris Rehm, MD, SFHM and Rachel Thompson, MD, MPH, SFHM were also elected to the Board for three-year terms.
“As I begin my year as SHM President, I continue to be energized by the opportunity to meet so many members at our annual meeting and be part of an organization that continues to have such a positive impact on our nation’s healthcare system,” says Ron Greeno, MD, MHM. “Together, we will continue to move the hospital medicine movement forward and improve patient care.”
The newly elected President of SHM’s Board of Directors is a founding member of SHM and serves as the Chief Strategy Officer for IPC Healthcare. During Dr. Greeno’s time with SHM, he has played a critical role in the organization’s advocacy efforts on The Hill in Washington, DC, including the CMS approval of the dedicated billing code for hospitalists. He was the founder of Cogent Healthcare, where he served as Executive Vice President for Strategy and Innovation, and is a nationally recognized expert on hospitalist programs and their clinical and administrative management. He has received board certification in internal, pulmonary and critical care medicine.
New board member Kris Rehm, MD, SFHM is Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University, and Director of the Division of Hospital Medicine at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Dr. Rehm has served on several national pediatric hospital medicine committees, including the Pediatric Hospital Medicine planning committee, and currently serves as the Pediatrics Committee Chair at SHM, the SHM representative to the Joint Council on Pediatric Hospital Medicine and is the first representative to the Council of Pediatric Subspecialties for hospital medicine.
“Since joining this field over 10 years ago, the growth of our specialty and our lead organization has been inspirational to be a part of,” notes Rehm. “Being on the Board will give me the opportunity to network with members through educational and local events, and continue to share the opportunities that SHM offers to the hospital medicine community.”
Also joining the Board is Rachel Thompson, MD, MPH, SFHM, Associate Professor and Medical Director for Clinical Care Transitions in the Department of Medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where she founded the Section of Hospital Medicine. Dr. Thompson is involved in the national hospital medicine and perioperative communities, served as regional president of SHM’s Pacific Northwest Chapter and is Chair of the Perioperative Work Group and the Chapter Support Committee.
“It is a true honor to join the Board; hospital medicine is at the front lines of care improvements nationally, and SHM provides the framework and the professional home for our contributions,” explains Dr. Thompson. “Together as members of the hospital medicine community, we are making amazing strides for our profession.”
